Naji al-Ali’s famous cartoon character is depicted as a ten-year old boy, and appeared for the first time in Al-Siyasa in Kuwait in 1969. The figure turned his back to the viewer from the year 1973, and clasped his hands behind his back. The artist explained that the ten-year old represented his age when forced to leave Palestine and would not grow up until he could return to his homeland; his turned back and clasped hands symbolised the character’s rejection of “outside solutions”. Handala wears ragged clothes and is barefoot, symbolising his allegiance to the poor.

Cross stitch embroidery is a traditional craft of Palestinian women, many of whom are highly skilled in the art, and rely on this much needed supplement to their household incomes. In Palestine today, small collectives of women pool their resources to both buy their materials and sell their products. The distinctive style of these items provides a recognisable mark of solidarity with Palestinian women.

Olive Co-operative purchases its embroidery from small women’s co-ops in the West Bank as well as bigger organisations such as the Ibdaa Cultural Centre and the Holy Land Handicraft Co-operative Society.
