Mother of Pearl carving was introduced in Palestine by Franciscan monks in the 14th century, and has been an important source of income, including for women.
A fine example of the crafts and traditions of Palestine, these farly traded Mother of Pearl products help balance out the seasonal olive trade and so alleviate local poverty, decrease unemployment, increase incomes, decrease emigration, and sustain the Palestinian handicraft industry.
